A look at some of the historic prefabricated kit Dairy Isle ice cream stands in Missouri. These do-it-yourself restaurants brought fast food to several rural Missouri towns in the 1950s and 60s. 2 original Dairy Isle ice cream stands remain in Missouri today, in Steelville and Greenfield. Time for a roadtrip this spring!

Firestone Baars Chapel in Columbia, Missouri was designed by Finnish-American architect Eero Saarinen and dedicated in 1957, seven years before the construction of his iconic Gateway Arch in St. Louis.

Despite cold weather and some technical difficulties, we had a great weekend at our Show Me Social in Salem, MO! A huge thank you to The Local for hosting us on Friday evening and the Bonebrake Center for letting use your space for Saturday's coffee talk. As for the squirrel who caused the town-wide power outage during the presentation — you are lucky we historic preservationists adapt quickly!

The Phelps County Courthouse in Rolla, Missouri was constructed between 1860-1868. The building was largely completed at the outbreak of the Civil War. On June 13, 1861, 3,000 German American Union troops arrived in Rolla, occupied the town and seized the courthouse. Throughout the Civil War the unfinished courthouse was used as a quartermaster office, hospital and stable. It wasn’t until 1863 when the county court finally occupied the building. The courthouse wasn’t fully completed until 1868. Addition were costructured in 1881, 1912, 1950, and 1979. The courthouse was used by the county until 1993 and it is currently owned by the Phelps County Historical Society.
