Mark Sappington House

Crestwood
St. Louis County

This two-story house is a stunning example of American Carpenter Gothic design and is one of two houses left in eastern Missouri that uses this architectural style. Constructed between 1840 and 1848, the Sappington House is in excellent condition. This house is located behind commercial property fronting Watson Road. About 10 ears ago it was substantially restored, no as a residence, but as a small law office. It was put on a modern reinforced concrete foundation with a full walkout basement. The house has since been sold and is owned by a developer who wishes to replace the home and commercial property with a new shopping center. Moving the house has been proposed but the contractor is unwilling to spend the money.

Listed in 2006.

Update: On Sunday, October 15, the house was moved to a new location has escaped demolition.
