ADVOCACY ALERT: URGENT SECTION 106 THREAT

For a brief background on the Section 106 process, you can read our previous post here.

Section 106 is about having a voice — make yours heard now!

The Senate plans to vote on November 9th to destroy the National Historic Preservation Act as we know it.

The legislation? Bipartisan American Affordability and Jobs Act (S. 5653)

What This Bill Will Do
Cut the public out of consultation entirely
Make Tribal consultation meaningless and exclude many sites of religious or cultural significance from consideration at all
Narrow the definition of federal undertaking and what constitutes harm to historic places
Allow the Federal government to seize SHPO and THPO offices and withhold funds
Gut mitigation and narrows the scope of when it is required
It will cause delays, not prevent them

Every voice matters — we need yours.

Don’t be fooled by the inclusion of empty promises. Authorization of funds does not mean they will be appropriated.
