The Missouri State Historic Preservation Office is seeking to fill 2 positions:
Architectural Historian 7010312
Salary: $1,992.82-$2,083.33 semi-monthly
Job Location: This position is with the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, Division of State Parks, and
will be located at 1659 E. Elm Street, Jefferson City, MO 65101.

What you’ll do:
- Provide guidance in the preservation and rehabilitation of historic properties, primarily through
interpretation of the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties (SOI
Standards). - Review architectural designs and project proposals to provide information on appropriate treatments and
technical assistance in accordance with the SOI Standards. - Focus on assuring compliance with state and federal preservation regulations related to historic property
treatments proposed or performed under historic tax credit programs, Section 106 undertakings, and/or
the monitoring of state held easements and covenants. - Advise property owners and project contacts how to provide sufficient documentation to ensure
proposals or applications are compatible with federal standards. - Evaluate the significance of cultural resources and their eligibility for the National Register of Historic
Places. - Develop, prepare, and present presentations regarding design and technical issues as related to
application submission and the SOI Standards. Certified Local Governments (CLGs), property owners,
preservationists, developers and/or other professionals will be the target of these presentations. - Visit historic properties, attend meetings, and prepare site visit reports. Site visit conditions may involve
abandoned buildings, walking on uneven surfaces, climbing flights of stairs, low light situations, and
dust. - This position will be performed with significant independence, judgment, and initiative within
established guidelines.
All you need for success:
Minimum Qualifications
- Master’s degree in history, architectural history, historic preservation, or closely related field and 1 year
of relevant experience. (Other approved education or experience may be considered as a substitute for
the required education or experience.)
Preferred Qualifications - A strong understanding of each of the treatment standards under the SOI’s Standards and be able to
interpret them for various building situations. - Knowledge of architectural design, construction detailing, construction procedures, and building
materials and systems with an emphasis on historic projects. - Familiarity with the National Historic Preservation Act, its implementing regulations, and the four-step
Section 106 review process. - Possess technical ability to skillfully review and interpret architectural styles, types, drawings, terms,
construction systems and materials.

Job Location: This position is with the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, Missouri State
Parks, and will be located at 1659 E. Elm, Jefferson City, MO 65101. Flexibility to work at a
department field location near selected candidate. This is a temporary, full-time, benefit-eligible
position based upon federal ARPA funding. Position funding will end no later than December 31,
2026.

will provide expertise in the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA), Section 106, and its

architects, developers, and communities. Enjoy applying your experience in architectural history,
historic preservation, building methods, and practices, to review undertakings for effects to historic
properties, resolve adverse effects through consultation, and the development of agreement

process.
What you’ll do:
Review federal undertakings subject to Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act
(NHPA) of 1966 for compliance with the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for the
Treatment of Historic Properties (SOI Standards)
Evaluate the significance of cultural resources and their eligibility for the National Register of
Historic Places.
Provide guidance for the long-term preservation of historic properties through the application
of the SOI Standards
Participate in and advise on the development of agreement documents to resolve adverse
effects to historic properties.
Respond to requests for information and provide technical assistance in the treatment of
historic properties
Assist in preservation planning efforts by working with federal, state, and local agencies,
private individuals, and community organizations
Monitor covenants and easements on historic properties held by the department; visit and
assess the condition of these properties
Provide technical expertise to the grants program through reviews of grant applications and
grant products with emphasis on development and pre-development projects
Develop, prepare, and present preservation-related educational materials
Use ESRI ArcGIS tools to research, identify, and evaluate historic properties.
Maintain electronic and physical files for SHPO Programs
Update databases with current information
All you need for success:
Minimum Qualifications

Preferred Qualifications
Ability to travel to inspect project sites before, during, and after completion of a project.
Inspection at sites can present exposure to uneven surfaces, lack of electricity, plumbing, and
possible unsecure structures.
Ability to lift up to 40 pounds occasionally
Knowledge of architectural history (architectural styles and architectural types), architecture,
design and construction, historic preservation programs funded by the Historic Preservation
Fund and their corresponding laws, regulations, and prescriptive literature (i.e., NHPA,
Preservation Briefs, National Register Bulletins, etc.) , building materials and systems,
preservation easements,
Knowledge of Microsoft Suite, Adobe, ArcGIS, data management systems
Possess an understanding of the SOI Treatment Standards and their application to Section 106
undertakings/consultation, grants, and easements
