Starting An Authentic Conversation: Kansas City’s African American Heritage Trail

April 8 @ 12:00 pm - 1:30 pm

From our 2020 conference schedule and a 2020 McReynolds Award Winner, Missouri Preservation brings you Starting an Authentic Conversation: Kansas City’s African American Heritage Trail

In 2018, the Historic Preservation Office of Kansas City, received a grant from the SHPO to create an African American Heritage Trail. While the historic preservation office staff had general knowledge of sites and resources, neither staff member is of African American descent. How do we tell this story, and how do we start an authentic conversation with the community? This project was more than just writing and mapping sites. Getting community buy in would have to be earned, and we started by listening.
