Meet Dick Greminger, owner of Rivertown Window Co. in Ste. Genevieve and long-time supporter of Missouri Preservation. When he isn’t busy providing windows for historic buildings across the Midwest Dick can be found at Sirros his restaurant that adjoins the historic Orris Theater where he hosts a popular summer concert series. Dick has worn many hats during his lifetime in Ste. Genevieve. He’s been a rehabber, concert promoter, restaurateur, alderman, mayor and everyone’s favorite window guy. In addition to running his businesses Dick continues to be active in the Community Foundation of the Ozarks. It’s that time of the year! We are now accepting nominations for the 2023 Places in Peril List, our annual list of endangered historic places in Missouri. Places in Peril is a media campaign with a goal to raise awareness for historic resources that suffer from issues such as neglect, threat of demolition, lack of funds, etc. More information and nomination forms can be found at www.preservemo.org/we-advocate/places-in-peril/

This brick Italianate I’m Bethany, Missouri was designed by prominent architect Edmund Eckel for hardware merchant James P. Hamilton and constructed in 1882. Hamilton’s initials and the date 1882 are carved into the stone double header over the second story window.

The John Sly farmstead in Atchison County, Missouri was constructed circa 1858.

Last week, a new sign was erected on the African American Heritage Trail in Columbia memorializing the former Douglass High School football field. Douglass was the last segregated school in Columbia

The Carver Birthplace Association will receive a $70,000 grant from the African American Cultural Heritage Action Fund, a program of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. The grant will go toward the restoration of the small building where George Washington Carver attended school.

Lemp Brewery Beer Depot, a St. Louis based company, located at 20th and McGee in Kansas City was constructed in 1895.

Originally constructed in 1906 to be the new Masonic Hall, this building became home to the First National Bank of Carterville (Mo.) and also served as their post office. In the 2008 edition of his book Southwest Missouri Mining, Jerry Pryor said that “the marble counters, grillwork, and solid mahogany fixtures from the bank/post office are now in the Har-Ber Village Museum on the Grand Lake of the Cherokees near Grove, Oklahoma.” Currently, this once grand building appears seemingly neglected, falling further into a state of disrepair, with busted out windows and an open roof.
