A Trip down El Camino Real

Join Missouri Preservation for a trip down the Kingshighway, El Camino Real, as featured in Bill Hart’s book “Historic Missouri Roadsides.”

“On this venture, most of the southbound trip is on US Highway 61, which follows much of an old Indian trail marked out in the 1780s and known alternately by the French and Spanish as La Chemin de Toi and El Camino Real, meaning literally the king’s way, or Kingshighway as it is known in many of the communities it traverses. Running contiguously with the Mississippi River, it connects St. Louis with the Southeast Missouri town of New Madrid. Most of Highway 61 used to be known as Missouri Highway 25. Later, the St.Louis, Iron Mountain, and Southern Railroad would facilitate commerce and tourism for many of the quaint river towns heading southward from St. Louis.”
